How has IICA integrated NBS into its projects?
An IICA delegation under the CCRAF program has assisted in the conversion of a sprinkler irrigation system to a drip irrigation system on an organic farm in St. Kitts and Nevis.
What lessons learned can you share about collaborating with farmers to implement NBS?
Farmers who train other farmers have a higher acceptance of the sustained application of the identified intervention, as the lead farmer/trainer always finds some labor- or hassle-saving technique in the intervention that makes acceptance more relevant to other farmers.
What examples of NBS innovation can you share from your experience at IICA?
Most smallholder farmers apply many NBS, as most are multi-crop farmers. Most of the challenges they face in the field are related to water conservation and weed management. I've also seen polyculture techniques used to control pests and diseases.
How are you promoting NBS education and training among farmers?
Farmer field schools and farmer exchange farm visits.
