Living barriers
Living barriers are used by Central American producers to conserve soil and water, reducing erosion and maintaining soil moisture. They also improve fertility with organic matter, increase biodiversity, and sometimes reduce pest problems.
Living barriers are used on some farms of Central American producers and allow for the conservation of soil and water by reducing erosion caused by precipitation, as well as retaining soil moisture in the plot to optimize the use of available water, improve fertility with the addition of organic matter, increase macro and micro biological diversity, and in some cases, reduce pest problems. They are also important as curtains or windbreaks. They constitute an appropriate strategy in times of intense rainfall, or in conditions of scarcity of rainfall and drought.
