Coil irrigation

Serpentine or zigzag irrigation are grooves made in the ground to allow controlled (directed) passage of water below the surface of the crop. The type of furrow will depend on the slope of the land: if it is a low slope, linear furrows are used, but if there are relatively steep slopes, an option to use are “S” shaped furrows or canterones, which are also used on low slopes, in order to have greater control over the conduction of irrigation water. Likewise, this method can be used to increase the length of the furrows, as well as in soils with clay textures, to improve water infiltration. It is worth highlighting the great importance that good levelling has in improving irrigation practices, since it generally justifies the investment necessary to carry out such work. To make a good design of the furrow irrigation system, factors such as the soil (slope, texture and depth), the crop and the water distribution system on the property must be taken into account.
