How has IICA integrated NBS into its projects?
Incorporating concrete initiatives in nature-based solutions into projects, for example, agroforestry systems for the recovery of degraded areas (cacao and açaí). Another initiative to incentivize rural producers to invest in actions that help preserve water is the National Water Agency (ANA) created the Water Producers Program. The program uses the concept of Payment for Environmental Services (PES), which incentivizes producers to invest in water conservation, receiving technical and financial support to implement water conservation practices.
What lessons learned can you share about collaborating with farmers to implement NBS?
That, when properly implemented, with appropriate technical assistance and rural extension, farmers are courageous allies in sustainable practices. Payment for environmental services (PES) is key to this process.
What examples of NBS innovation can you share from your experience at IICA?
The water production program is an excellent example that we could detail and share.
How are you promoting NBS education and training among farmers?
Developing and implementing in-person and virtual training for various initiatives, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
