Drinking water for rural schools in Sipaliwini
Rural schools serving villages suffer a similar fate, with poor access to clean water, relying on mercury-contaminated river water, high levels of turbidity caused by gold mining, logging, and the lack of adequate sanitation facilities, forcing students to use these water sources. The Rooms Katholiek Bijzonder Onderwijs Foundation, which operates 76 primary and secondary schools in Suriname, many of them in the interior of the country, serving isolated villages, is seeking support to install rainwater harvesting systems in three of its primary schools.
