SABERES Program: Planning and innovation for climate resilience in Mexico
The SABERES program, Territorial Planning and Financial Innovation to Increase Resilience to Climate Change, is an initiative funded by the German government (IKI Fund). It works with small farmers (85% of producers in the case of Mexico), in areas highly vulnerable to climate change in the states of Campeche, Chiapas, Jalisco, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Puebla and Tabasco to improve adaptation to climate change and resilience in the rural sector, strengthening land use planning, with an Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA) approach, promoting the adoption of best practices in sustainable livestock production systems, honey, mezcal, agave, coffee, and cocoa. It will offer innovative financing mechanisms.

Objective:
Improve the capacity of organisations and small rural producers to adapt their production systems and territories to new climatic conditions.

How has IICA integrated NBS into its projects?
Sustainable use of natural resources: Sites with potential for tourism services, such as waterfalls, caves, and trails, have been mapped, promoting alternative and sustainable use of these resources. Environmental conservation and restoration practices: The Conscious Tourism initiative seeks to preserve and strengthen the community's natural and cultural heritage by incorporating ecosystem-based adaptation practices.
What lessons learned can you share about collaborating with farmers to implement NBS?
The leading role of development stakeholders in diagnosis, planning, and management is key to the participation, commitment, and ownership of sustainable processes.
